Jamie's September 28, 1999 TV Guide/AOL Chat

TVGchat:

We're being joined now by Jamie Denton of "The Pretender." Welcome Jamie, glad you could join us tonight.

Jamie:

Hey, everybody. Thanks for logging on.

Question:

Love the show!!!!!!  How do you like playing  very bad guy?  What was your insperation for you character?

Jamie:

Playing a bad guy is great, because I normally get cast as the guy next door. It's great to play someone like Mr. Lyle because you get to say and do things that you'd never do in real life.  No real inspiration.  He's just your typical sociopath. :)

Question:

Has there been any cast changes this season?

Jamie:

There will be two new recurring characters, at least.

Question:

I missed the premier.  Any details please

Jamie:

The premiere covered a lot of ground.  The writers tried to address a number of storylines and it was fairly complicated.  So, it's tough to summarize.  Obviously, Jarod escaped again.  Mr. Raines is born again.  Mr. Lyle was very briefly in charge.  And Miss Parker obviously survived the gunshot.

Question:

Is Mr. Lyle going to be in charge of the Centre for long?  Or is Mr. Parker coming back soon?

Jamie:

We're not sure when Mr. Parker will be back in the Center.  Lyle's position is tenuous because he already botched the Jarod capture.  The two new characters I mentioned will fit in the heirarchy around Mr. Lyle.

Question:

what do you like best about playing the role of Mr. Lyle    -Mari

Jamie:

The fact that he's very unpredicatable.  Sometimes it's good for me as an actor, sometimes it's bad.  The best part is when he is more devious.  The down side is that, obviously, Jarod and Miss Parker will always get the best of him and that weakens the character.

Question:

Hi Jamie! What was it like filming the scenes with Michael in the Season Premiere?? Lyle was bad really bad!!

Jamie:

Michael is great.  He is very easy to work with.  The scenes with him are obviously the most fun, because they're the most confrontational for Lyle, since capturing Jarod is his main goal.

Question:

What other projects besides The Pretender do you have in mind?

Jamie:

I'm in a play that's currently running in LA, called "In Walked Monk."  That runs for another month, then there's the possibility of a couple independent films.  That's it for now.

Question:

Are Lyle and Miss Parker getting closer this season?

Jamie:

Absolutely not.  LOL  Which is unfortunate because Andrea is such a great actress and the uncertainty of their relationship is always more interesting than a black and white sibling rivalry.

Question:

Is Mr Lyle going to stay this mean?  I like him this way and BTW ... I loved the white suit!

Jamie:

Mr. Lyle is supposed to slowly unravel this season.  And I'm not aware of any more ice cream suits.

Question:

How is Jamie Denton similar and dissimilar to the character he portrays on "The Pretender?"

Jamie:

I have never, ever ordered a mail-order bride.  LOL  The similarities are purely physical.

Question:

Hello, Jamie!  Great job at being so ruthless and nasty. ;-)  I wanted to know, do you enjoy being an antagonist on a TV show?  Are you afraid of being type cast?  A Fan, Monica :-)

Jamie:

Yes, I enjoy it.  And I don't have any fear of typecasting.  The role is so far from what I normally play, it's the opposite.  It's an opportunity that I don't normally get and there's no fear of getting too many of these kinds of roles.

Question:

Hey, Jamie.  I wanted to know, are you, or any other Pretender fans hosting any conventions in the LA region soon?  At all?  Ever?  Thanks, once again. Monica :-)

Jamie:

I don't know of any, like the SF convention we attended last year.  But if the opportunity is presented I'll definitely attend.

Question:

What is the hardest part about playing Mr. Lyle?   -Mari

Jamie:

Trying to avoid the obvious choices as an actor.  Trying to present the character the way the creators originally intended, which is kind of a twisted Jimmy Stewart.

Question:

How many shows a season do you film?

Jamie:

Twenty this year.

Question:

Hey, Jamieee!  I wanted to know:  Who are you closest to on the cast?  Do you and Michael ever 'hang'?  Thanks!   Monica :-)

Jamie:

Michael's schedule is so packed, I don't think he has much social time.  I'm probably closest to Jonny Gries (Broots), because we have the most in common ... Sports, music, etc.

Question:

Will we see the return of Mr. Lyle's red glove?

Jamie:

Nope.  This year there will be only black and white gloves.

Question:

Is there a practical joker on the set?  If so, who is it?   -Mari

Jamie:

There absolutely is, and it's John Gries. The guy is just a nut.

Question:

Which thumb is Lyle suppose to be missing because in several past episodes and the season premiere they have messed it up?

Jamie:

To my knowledge, there has never been a mistake until this season premiere.  That one was an editing mistake, a case of the negative being flipped.  But, I believe, that is the only time it's happened.

Question:

Is it uncomfortable to weat that leather glove?

Jamie:

After three years, I'm getting used to it.

Question:

With "everything changing" are you going to get religion too?

Jamie:

Personally, I already have it.  Lyle is not a very good prospect.

Question:

What is a typical day like for you?  How much of you is portrayed in your character? Shannon

Jamie:

An actor's typical day (when they're working) is pretty great.  You have lots of spare time.  You're not starving for a change.  So you get to do the things most people only get to do on weekends.  My role on the show is such that I don't work a lot of days.

Question:

Hi Jamie!  In an episode from last season Mr. Lyle was clipping pictures for another mail order bride.  Do you think we will see him with a new wife this season?  --  Cheryl

Jamie:

Lyle's Asian fixation will be revisited in a number of episodes. As early as episode #3.

Question:

How do fans react to you since you play a evil character?

Jamie:

It really varies.  I've had people move away from me in restaurants, which I think is hilarious.  I've also had people come up to me excitedly and want to talk about the show.

Question:

So, Mr. Denton, what's  the stroy behind the tatoo?

Jamie:

The tattoo is in memory of my dad.

Question:

What type of acting work have done before "The Pretender"?

Jamie:

I was in the movies Face Off, Primary Colors, That Old Feeling ... and a number of guest appearances on TV shows.  Plus six years of non-stop Chicago theater.

Question:

Why did you choose to take up acting?

Jamie:

I stumbled into it, late in life, doing community theater just for fun.  Realized that I liked it better than carrying a briefcase for a living.  So I moved to Chicago to give it a shot.

TVGchat:

Jamie, thanks for joining us this evening.  Best of luck, and please come back again.

Jamie:

Thanks for having me.  Make sure and catch next week's episode where Miss Parker and Lyle are locked in a box the entire show.
